OSU Lantern Article on NNEMAP from a Volunteer

It goes without saying that we are heavily dependent on our volunteers to do what we do each day. What makes working at NNEMAP such great fun is the different group of volunteers who come to the pantry daily. Retirees, college students, nearby neighbors, youth groups, etc. are mixed every day. Check out the link below written by one of our volunteers about the culture at NNEMAP. You can also find it on the OSU Lantern website! Thank you Sarah!

CYP Contest Makes a Splash

The Columbus Young Professionals Club invited NNEMAP Food Pantry to participate in the M.A.D. Splash Challenge, a three-round fundraising event–with eliminations. Yikes!

Don’t worry, though–we got this. We are seasoned competitors in the fundraising contest arena. We stunned the competition by nearly taking the top prize in the United Way’s “Knock Out Poverty” event in 2019 and racked up lots of extra prize money for our troubles.

We were leading in the final days of the Aetna “Voices of Health” voting game in 2019 before getting swamped at the last minute and finishing just out of the money. Aetna generously awarded us $5,000 for being such an inspiration.

So…we can do this! How, you ask? Simple.

From APRIL 5-19, we need to make donations through the NNEMAP Food Pantry page through The Columbus Foundation’s Giving Store site. Don’t worry–we’ll send a link to make it easy.

If we don’t finish in the top 8, that’s where the splash comes in–a member of our fundraising team will be taking a plunge in the pool at Taylor House Apartments. Brrrr!!!!

If…I mean WHEN we advance to ROUND 2, we’ll need social media support–like our posts, comment on them and share them with your friends.

ROUND 3 ends with a limited budget ($100) creative challenge–the top 4 teams advancing out of round 2 compete for the top prize, a $500 bonus donation, and a lifetime of fame and notoriety for winning the first ever M.A.D. Splash!

WHAT WE NEED:

*Donors! Any amount will help us get there. We’ll send links when the contest goes live on Monday, April 5.

*Social Media Support–like, comment, and share NNEMAP Food Pantry’s posts to get us to the final round.

*Creative Thinkers/Insect Architects–in case we need to build a beehive!

SOUND LIKE FUN? We thought so! Please join our M.A.D. Splash Fundraising Team today! E-mail Sean Becker, Director of Development & Marketing at sean@nnemappantry.org or call 614-297-9935 to find out how you can help!

Word Up–Books are Great Donations!

Restricted access to libraries and public school shutdowns have made reading material hard to come by. I almost–ALMOST–resorted to dusting off some Dickens in a moment of desperation.

For a lot of people, including NNEMAP Food Pantry customers, books are just hard to get ahold of right now. A few organizations do their best to keep our bookshelf stocked, but it has been difficult to keep up with pandemic-related demand. From our youngest readers to our oldest bookworms, these items are more popular at the pantry than ever before.

Can you help? Why, yes, you can! If your young readers have outgrown their kiddie books or you have boxes gathering dust in the basement, please consider donating them to NNEMAP Food Pantry. We will guarantee a good home for every author from Dr. Seuss to, yep, Charles Dickens.

What a Year–2020 in Review

Say what you will about 2020, but you have to admit it was not uneventful. For a year of pandemic-induced lockdowns and travel restrictions, it was not without its excitement.

NNEMAP Food Pantry experienced a year of accelerated growth and explosive expansion in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. In case you missed it, we….

*Expanded our service territory to include the whole City of Columbus and Franklin County,

*Allowed shoppers to come once a week instead of twice a month,

*Added Thursday afternoon/evening hours so we are now open 6 days a week,

*Introduced a popular grocery delivery service for customers who can’t get out.

As expected given the economic fallout of the pandemic, we were busier than ever distributing food to our friends in the community. By the end of the year we…

*Served 5,137 unique households (up from 3,736 in 2019)

*Served 17,480 unique individuals (11,904 in 2019)

*Fulfilled 18,546 requests for groceries (17,338 in 2019)

*Distributed the equivalent of 605,250 meals (526,731 in 2019).

Thank you to our supporters, including our incredible church networkUnited Way of Central OhioThe City of Columbus Department of DevelopmentThe Columbus Foundation; and hundreds of individual donors who gave what they could for those who had nothing to spare.

Thank you for helping us navigate a most unusual year. 2021 is off and running already. We are looking forward to running this race with you again!
